Albuquerque Trucking Accident Lawyer Explains a Coup-Contrecoup Brain Injury Is and How it Could be Caused by a Trucking Wreck

Of all motor vehicle accidents, 18 wheeler collisions are most likely to cause catastrophic personal injuries such as traumatic brain injuries, or TBIs.  One of the most common types of TBIs is a coup-contrecoup brain injury.  What makes this type of brain injury so dangerous is that it could be caused without any direct blow to the head or without any damage to the skull.  This means that a person could sustain a coup-contrecoup brain injury even though the skull is still completely protecting the brain and even if the person is never directly hit.  Our Albuquerque trucking accident lawyer explains how these types of auto accidents could result in serious personal injuries.

Due to these serious injuries, victims and their families may be entitled to significant compensation.  This includes compensation for a victim’s pain and suffering, lost wages, lost future earnings, property damage, medical bills, future medical bills, and other damages related to the trucking accident.  Here at the Caruso Law Offices, P.C., our experienced Albuquerque trucking accident lawyer works with victims and their families to recover these damages to ensure that a victim could be completely compensated for what he or she needs in the future.

What is a Coup-Contrecoup Brain Injury?

A coup-contrecoup brain injury is a type of traumatic brain injury which affects how a person’s brain functions.  A coup-contrecoup brain injury is caused by a powerful whiplash motion which violently shakes the head.  The brain suffers injury in the whiplash motion to opposite ends of the whiplash.  This means that the brain sustains injury on the side where the impact was and on the opposite side of the impact.

This is because the brain slides in the skull.  As you know, the skull is a hardened bone which encases the brain.  The skull protects the brain from exterior harm.  The skull is very strong and does an excellent job at protecting the brain.  Inside the skull, the brain is wrapped by multiple layers which perform a variety of functions.  These layers also help to pad and protect the brain in from injury.  Lastly, the brain is suspended slightly in cerebral spinal fluid.  This fluid also helps to cushion the bran and perform other functions.

When the head sustains a powerful impact like in a trucking accident, the brain can slide forwarded in the brain and strike the inside of the hardened skull.  This can result damage to that side of the brain.  Then the whiplash motion can take the head backwards which caused the brain to then slide backwards and into the other side of the skull.  This is way causes damage to that ed of the brain as well.  This is known as a coup contra-coup brain injury de to the back and forth impacts.
