Complications From Traumatic Brain Injuries Caused by New Mexico Trucking Crashes

Traumatic Brain Injuries and Complications Caused by New Mexico Trucking Crashes

Traumatic brain injuries are one of the worst injuries that a victim of New Mexico trucking crashes could suffer.  This is because traumatic brain injuries do not heal like a broken bone.  They cannot just be patched up.  Sometimes they are not even detectible on an imaging study.  And while traumatic brain injuries are caused by direct, physical damage to the brain such as a piece of debris striking the head and brain, sometimes traumatic brain injuries can be caused without anything striking the head.  This is because traumatic brain injuries can be caused by just the jostling of the brain back-and-forth in the head due to a violent collision.

Victims who have been involved in New Mexico trucking crashes are likely to suffer a traumatic brain injury for just this reason.  The violent impact will cause damage to the brain even if a physical piece of the car or truck does not hit the head.  There are many possible effects of a brain injury which could impair a person’s entire daily and customary activities.  These injuries could be temporary, but they could also be permanent and inhibit a person’s entire life.

Some common medical complications from a traumatic brain injury caused by New Mexico trucking crashes include the following:

Seizures – Individuals suffering from a traumatic brain injury could develop a seizure disorder.  This is dangerous and life-threatening in and of itself, but makes other daily activities such as driving a car, bathing, or going up and down stairs significantly more dangerous.

Vertigo – This is a very serious condition which results in a spinning, dizziness feeling.  It can happen after a traumatic brain injury and make a person feel like he or she just got out of a washing machine; everything will be spinning in a circle.  This makes daily activities impossible to do, including driving a car or even just walking.

Headaches and Migraines – Severe traumatic brain injuries will cause the worst case headaches and migraines.  Individuals may be extremely sensitive to sound or light, and may have debilitating bouts where they cannot focus on a single thing due to the extreme head pain.

Hydrocephalus (excessive fluid in the brain) – Because of the trauma to the brain, your brain may swell and fluid may build up in the spaces of the brain.  This fluid could even be mixed with blood from the trauma.  But even months after an accident, the brain can still have excessive fluid build up.  This is extremely dangerous because the brain is in a “closed system,” meaning there is no way for the brain to drain the fluid build up fast enough to control the pressure.  If the pressure becomes too great, the brain will sustain addition damage and it can result in the death of a patient.

Blood Vessel Damage – After a traumatic brain injury the blood vessels inside the brain may be damaged.  This may render them more susceptible to other very dangerous conditions such as strokes, blood clots, and other deadly injuries.
